The NAPSEA consortium, led by Deltares, will support national and local authorities in selecting effective nutrient load reduction measures and to gain political support for their implementation. The diverse knowledge and expertise of the partners is strongly rooted within the different disciplines and past collaborations between these partners will enforce the collaboration.
Stichting Deltares (the Netherlands)
Deltares is an independent institute for applied research in the field of water, subsurface and infrastructure. With experience all over the world, Deltares’ experts combine knowledge with state-of-the-art numerical modelling techniques to provide insight into marine and coastal processes ranging from near-bed to global scale. Deltares’ consultancy work and simulation models are rooted in a clear understanding of how water systems work. Models help making vital predictions concerning matters like river levels or the flow patterns and quality of groundwater and surface water. Since the quality and quantity of groundwater and surface water are inextricably linked, we produce linked models in this area and use integrated water management techniques to support policy-making and management in the area of fresh water reserves. Deltares is the coordinator of the NAPSEA project.

NMI-Agro (the Netherlands)
NMI, located in Wageningen, the Netherlands, is a private consulting firm carrying out applied research on the topic of sustainable agriculture. Main topics treated are plant nutrient and fertilization management, soil quality, and closing loops in agriculture. We combine research, practical knowledge and a wealth of data to contribute to solving the complex issues facing our society.
UFZ (Germany)
The UFZ is part of the Helmholtz Association and the national lab for environmental research in Germany. It investigates the complex interactions between humans and the environment and demonstrates ways on which a sustainable use of our natural resource base is possible for the benefit of both humankind and environment. UFZ leads workpackage 3 on Nutrient Pathways.
UBA (Germany)
Founded in 1974, UBA is Germany’s main scientific environmental authority. Under the jurisdiction of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, UBA is responsible for a diverse range of topics including the protection of freshwaters and marine waters. UBA provides independent recommendations to political decision-makers, conducts research as in NAPSEA, implements legislation and informs the general public about all essential environmental topics.
Hereon (Germany)
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon (Hereon) is one of 18 members of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, Germany’s largest science organisation. Hereon, located in Geesthacht near Hamburg, conducts international cutting-edge research for a changing world to generate knowledge and innovation towards more resilience and sustainability. Among other foci the Hereon addresses the challenges of climate change in a solution-oriented manner and facilitates sustainable management as well as the protection of the coasts and marine environment through comprehensive scientific understanding. Hereon comprises 14 research institutes and the German Climate Service Centre. Within Hereon, both the Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modelling and the Institute of Carbon Cycles are contributing to this project. Research focusses on coastal processes including interaction between land, sea and human beings. The common aim is the assessment of current and future changes in coastal areas, and the creation of a scientific basis for a sustainable and forward-looking coastal management. Hereon leads WP4: Ecosystem health.

FT links science to policy and governance by emphasizing the integration of knowledge and expertise, covering various fields and levels of decision-making. Our core policy areas: freshwater and marine management, adaptation to climate change, agriculture, environmental economics and sustainable tourism and sport. FT provides reliable and timely delivery of policy assessments and recommendations, environmental plan and strategy development, knowledge management and services including online solutions and database development, economic and statistical assessments as well as knowledge-based helpdesk services. FT leads the workpackage on Governance and Policy
